–ENGLISH VERSION–

. V: For as long as there have been formal high schools, one of the priorities of the academic staff has always been that students should be able to graduate with a respectable level of soft skills; that is, public speaking, active listening, and written communication. Each generation has sought different ways to improve the verbal eloquence of the student body, and one of the most recent manifestations of this desire to reach our country has been a type of debate known as Model United Nations or MUN.

Created at Harvard University a few years after the founding of the UN, a MUN conference involves bringing together a large number of participants (usually high school or college-aged) within a committee, assigning each a country to represent; it is precisely a simulation of what happens within the diplomatic sessions of the international organization and shows how negotiations occur between the ambassadors of each member state of the General Assembly. Each participant becomes a delegate, manifesting a very specific view of the world and encouraging the mental flexibility to consider opposing points of view. If the assignment given to one is, for example, that of a Muslim country, one must express oneself and interact with the other competitors as if one shares the ideals of the government one represents; if one has liberal leanings and assigns North Korea, one becomes a socialist for a weekend. One must make multiple speeches, negotiate with countries of opposing positions, and must be versed in international relations and current politics to do a good job. At the end of the conference, those who have done the best job are awarded a diploma for second and third place, and a gavel (such as a judge’s gavel) for first place in each committee.

This year, in the first conference attended since 2019, the Antonio Raimondi High School delegation achieved the impressive feat of winning the Best Small Delegation award at SSMUN, organized by San Silvestre College this August, winning seven awards, two of which were first places, and two others being given to students debating at MUN for the first time: Maria José del Águila and Micaela Lizárraga, both getting a Verbal Mention for their performance within their respective committees. In this article, both will talk about their experiences at the conference, their motivation for joining the team, and the positively unusual results obtained after much effort.

MJ: Joining MUN is something I have wanted to do since 2019, but I didn’t because I was on the soccer and basketball team. We started the school year in 2020 and after two weeks we were already in quarantine because of the pandemic caused by COVID19. During the two years of virtual classes, I kept in touch with Carlos Andres Condori, a student at the school, who had started MUN in 2019 and continued to do so during the state of emergency in virtual mode. Whenever he mentioned to me that he was about to participate in one, my desire to do so increased. However, I would wait until we returned to face-to-face, as it would be a much more real experience. We finally returned to school in March 2022 and one of the first things I wanted to do most was to be able to attend a MUN conference. I spent the entire middle of the year insisting to Carlos that we sign up for one, as well as to Professor Pablo Stucchi. Finally, a week before the July vacation, he informed us that in the third week of August we would have the opportunity to participate in the San Silvestre MUN. My response was immediate, although I did not know in detail how it worked or what I had to do. The only thing I was sure of was that it was going to be an experience where I would learn a lot.

M: Doing the position paper was the hardest part. There you must, in less than two pages, explain your country’s position on the issue to be discussed in the committee, and what proposal you must solve it. My committee was called ECOSOC (Economic and Social Council) and the topic to be discussed was the economic sanctions against Russia and how they affected the world economy. My country was Venezuela, which supported Russia, a very difficult situation, considering I had most of the West against me and only a few countries in my favor. Spending hours researching a subject that I did not even like and having a country that did not necessarily support my ideals was complicated. I was so nervous, that even as I was writing it, I felt amazing butterflies in my stomach, imagining everything that could go right and wrong. But nerves were not the only emotion. At the same time, I was in term exams, and having to study for them and dedicate time to the delivery of the Position Paper at the same time, was not an easy task. But, at the end of the day, it was done, and all thanks to the incredible help of Charlie and Vale, whom I will never stop thanking. As I was told at some point, the ugly part was already done, the fun part happens on the day of the debate….

It all started with a beautiful opening ceremony where I was able to chat with my fellow delegation members. For most of them, this was our first MUN, and, even though, as the saying goes, «the devil is the devil’s greatest comfort,» I was reassured to know that they were just as anxious as I was. The first thing we did was to identify where our committee was since the main thing was to arrive early to get a good seat (sitting at the back of the room was not an option). Once that was done, it was to go over and over our opening speech, which I had finished writing earlier that morning. The 45 minutes of the ceremony flew by and suddenly it was time to leave for the halls. At the door, I met two guys from my own committee, just as lost as I was, and I immediately spoke to them. I didn’t tell them it was my first MUN until the event was over, so I had to appear confident and assured. I always maintained that attitude. From the moment I stepped into that class until I left, even though there were several guys and girls, a thousand times more prepared than me, I never stopped showing self-assurance, no matter how little or how much I knew. I sat in the front and looked around at the other students. Some looked like elementary school students, others like college students, it was impressive the variety of people there. Looking at them, I also started thinking about how my other classmates would be, especially Majo, since she and I had been talking about this for months, and now it was becoming a reality….

MJ: When I got to my committee I was shaking with nerves, I hadn’t even been able to eat breakfast because if I did, I would throw up. I arrived and the moment I sat down I couldn’t stop thinking that all I wanted was for it to go well. Although the procedure had been explained to me, there were many things that could happen that did not follow a certain parameter. My chairs (judges) started talking and what reassured me the most was that they were three very straightforward girls and not as serious as I expected. In fact, they first asked if it was our first MUN and the response of the delegates made them more permissive during the two days of the debate.

The first part of the debate started which is the opening speech where you have to speak for 1 minute about your country’s position and give the best first impression. My turn came and that minute went by faster than I thought it would. I knew I had done well: I didn’t forget anything, and I spoke loud and clear. Little by little the debate progressed, and I became more and more confident. I had already formed alliances with other delegates who shared my ideas (called «blocs»), and it was much easier to go out and speak. However, not everything was rosy. I had to leave my bloc because of a news story involving my country. This news is called «updates» and, even if they are false, they are useful to make the debate interesting, and much more controversial. They can cause new rivalries between countries and drastic changes between alliances, as in my case. Before making such a radical decision, I went through many, many doubts and moments of indecision. I was frustrated to the point of tears, so much so that I didn’t speak for an entire session, until, after turning to Charlie for advice, I was able to make the decision to betray my former bloc. I returned to my committee after lunch with my delegation and the moment came when I had to announce my change. The satisfaction was incredible, I felt that everything was settled, but there was still the second and last day.

The next morning, the debate started straight away. I knew I had to talk a lot more than the day before and improve on everything my chairs had told me the day before. I was calm because I knew I was doing well. As a final act, we had to present the draft resolution (a document where all the proposals of the countries that make up your block are written). The objective was to have the whole committee vote for it and that is what happened. Changing it was the best decision I could make, and we were victorious. After that, the debate officially came to an end and we proceeded to a «fun time» a time where both chairs and delegates get to know each other, make challenges and talk. It was time to go to the auditorium for the closing ceremony, but my two chairs wanted to give me some final feedback. It was very unexpected to hear that, after such a radical move, I had performed in the best way, and that I had done amazingly. I was so happy about what they told me, but I was left with a bad feeling: I didn’t know if they were doing it out of commitment, or because I had the chance to receive an award. Anyway, I would see about that a few minutes later…

M: And in the blink of an eye, we were sitting again in the auditorium where the closing ceremony took place. The assistant director, along with other students and former students who helped in the organization of the event, gave some very moving words to close it as it should have been. Immediately after, they proceeded to the awards ceremony, a moment of great tension and nerves. Personally, I didn’t think I would win anything. Being my first MUN and debating with other students who stood out a lot, receiving a diploma was the last thing I expected. Nevertheless, it was. Hearing my name when they announced the winners of Verbal Mention (fourth place) was spectacular, I couldn’t believe it. Likewise, seeing my friends from my committee and others receive their awards, especially Paula, Vale, Charlie, and Majo, was something that filled me with joy and, above all, pride.

MJ: They finished presenting the awards for each committee and it was time to award the delegations: large delegation and small delegation. When our school’s name was called out when the winner of the latter category was announced, everyone’s reaction was genuine and emotional. Not because we thought we were not going to win it since that was not our initial purpose, but because it showed our effort as a group, after weeks of hard preparation and dedication. What I liked most about receiving it was the fact that it showed the school that the MUN is something that should be taken more into account, and that, like us, many other students could be part of the delegation and add one more trophy to the shelf. Aside from that, the fact that I received that award, plus a Verbal Mention, made me feel very good about myself, even more so since this was my first MUN and having all that experience being the first is something I will never forget. Also, thank you to Valentina and Charlie for helping me and being there for me throughout my first MUN.

M: This is how these two exhaustive, but very enriching days ended. Having to say goodbye to the friends I had made and promising that we would meet again at another conference, brought me a feeling of nostalgia and a bit of sadness. That is probably one of the most beautiful aspects of the MUN: working as a team and creating friendships. That is why participating in this activity not only helped me in my academic formation and to develop my verbal skills, but also made me learn essential values for our development as people, such as perseverance, discipline, self-control, maturity, and solidarity. It is an experience that I will always keep in my heart. The early mornings, the nerves, the cramps in my back from always sitting down, and the wounds in my heels from so much walking, without a doubt, were totally worth it.

Translated by Valentina Ursino
